I was a researcher for Peace Direct which captured the perspectives of CSOs in Francophone Africa on the decolonization of aid and global philanthropy, contributing valuable insights on the enabling environment for local actors.

As Research and Learning Coordinator, I collaborated with partners in Ghana, Zambia, and Malawi to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of locally-led CSOs. Through diverse facilitation approaches and comprehensive research oversight, I contributed to creating a bank of evidence on best practices for supporting civil society. This role was pivotal in influencing global north funding models to adopt longer-term, localised approaches, aligning with the #ShiftThePower movement to challenge traditional philanthropy and development practices.

As Lead Researcher, I documented best practices of local giving in Africa and explored their applicability in the Ghanaian context. This involved reviewing the role of regional organizations like ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and AfCFTA in facilitating local giving, which aligns with The Share Trust’s strategic focus on community-driven collective action.

I provided expertise in localization, organizational development, and capacity strengthening to landscape assessment teams in Cameroon, identifying resources and understanding enabling factors for local organizations. This experience is directly relevant to the consultancy’s focus on mapping opportunities and capacities across SHGs, LNOs, and the enabling environment in Ghan

Publications on social movements and civic space

In Africa, many civil society organisations (CSOs) depend on donor funding to sustain their work. However, over the last decade, donors have started reducing their financial support as a result of shifting priorities.

Civil society organisations (CSOs) in Ghana are generally fragile and dependent on donor funding mechanisms for survival. Recent studies show that financial sustainability of CSOs is challenging, which has spurred conversations on new alternative funds mobilisation routes, innovative methods and strategies to ensure its sustainability.

The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) and the Fund for Global Human Rights (FGHR) recognised that it is imperative for networks of influence within civil society (organised and organic) to be harnessed and supported to respond effectively to growing threats to civic freedoms.

Social accountability is an approach towards building accountability that relies on civic engagement in which citizens participate directly or indirectly in demanding accountability from service providers and public officials. It usually combines information on rights and service delivery with collective action for change. It has become a tool for direct engagement with service providers to ensure that citizens get adequate services or adequate explanation when those services are not available.
